Can You Still Get an Abortion in Illinois?

Can You Still Get an Abortion in Illinois?

The overturn of Roe v. Wade in 2022 has seen abortion access pulled apart state by state. Over a dozen states now ban abortion almost entirely, and several more have passed laws that make it nearly impossible to access. However, in Illinois, abortion is still legal, protected, and accessible.

Lawmakers here planned ahead and passed legislation that safeguards abortion as a fundamental right, regardless of what happens federally. That means if you’re in Illinois or need to come here from out of state, you still have the right to decide for yourself. It’s your body, and that choice should always be yours to make.

At Rose Women’s Medical Center, we understand how important it is to have access to safe, legal, compassionate abortion care. We’re not just a clinic, we’re a haven where people are treated with respect, listened to, and supported through one of the most personal healthcare decisions they may ever face.

In this blog, we’ll explain the current abortion laws in Illinois, what your options are, and how the process works.

Abortion is legal in Illinois and protected by law

Illinois has some of the most protective abortion laws in the country. It’s one of the few states that moved quickly after Roe v. Wade was overturned to reaffirm abortion access in its laws.

You can get an abortion in Illinois regardless of your reason. There are no bans based on gestational age, and you can get an abortion up until viability (which is generally considered around 24-26 weeks). After that point, abortion is still allowed if your health or life is at risk.

In Illinois, you don’t need to explain your situation or justify your decision. This is thanks to the Reproductive Health Act, passed in 2019. This law recognizes abortion as a fundamental right, just like any other form of healthcare. That makes Illinois one of the most supportive states in the country for reproductive freedom.

What types of abortion are available?

There are two main types of abortion: medication abortion and procedural abortion.

Medication abortion

Medication abortion is available if you’re early in pregnancy, typically up to 10 weeks. It involves taking two sets of pills, either in the clinic or at home. It’s safe, effective, and gives you more control over when and where the process happens.

Procedural abortion

This is a short procedure that involves gently removing the pregnancy from the uterus. It’s typically available up to the legal limit and is quick and safe. Most people are in and out in just a few hours.

What if I’m coming from out of state?

Every week, Rose Women’s Medical Center sees patients who’ve traveled from neighboring states where abortion is banned or heavily restricted. Illinois is a haven, and we’re here to make the process as simple and supportive as possible.

If you’re traveling for care, we can help you schedule everything efficiently. Our team provides step-by-step instructions, helps you understand what to bring and expect, and ensures you have access to aftercare and follow-up support, even after you return home.

What happens at your appointment?

Every abortion at Rose Women’s Medical Center begins with a consultation. We confirm your pregnancy, determine how far along you are, and explain your options clearly. You’ll be able to ask questions, talk through concerns, and make a decision that feels right for you.

If you choose a medication abortion, we’ll provide the pills in the clinic and explain how and when to take them. If you choose a procedural abortion, we’ll guide you through preparation, the day-of experience, and recovery.

So, can you still get an abortion in Illinois? Yes. In a time when access is shrinking across the country, Illinois stands firm in protecting the right to choose. If you need an abortion, it’s your right to make that decision safely, with support and dignity.
