Why do I need to see a gynecologist?

Your gynecologist is your go-to doctor for sexual, reproductive, and hormonal health. Just as how you should visit your primary care doctor every year, you should check in with your gynecologist annually for routine, comprehensive care. You might also need to see your gynecologist on an as-needed basis if you:

  • Have irregular periods when you normally don’t
  • Missed a period
  • Need birth control
  • Have abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Experience pain during intercourse
  • Have pain in your lower abdomen

Because these symptoms could be signs of pregnancy, ovarian cysts, or sexually transmitted diseases — among other issues — it’s important to schedule an appointment with your gynecologist right away if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms.

How do I prepare for my gynecologist appointment?

Your dedicated, caring gynecologist at Rose Women’s Health Center spends time going over all of your health concerns. Your gynecologist will note your medical history such as the frequency of your periods, so if you don’t already track your cycle, it can be helpful to start doing so. Usually, your gynecologist needs to know the first day of your most recent period, as well as any history of irregular periods, if applicable.

If you’re sexually active or think you could be pregnant, you might need a pelvic exam or blood test during your gynecologist visit. You don’t usually need to do anything in particular, to prepare for these evaluations. It’s also helpful to bring in a list of your current medications and dosages, including supplements or over-the-counter medications.

If you need to see an experienced, caring gynecologist, schedule an appointment at Rose Women’s Health Center either by calling the clinic or by booking online today.
